CRIME NEWS

  • Jesse Leatherwood was found guilty yesterday of intoxication manslaughter after he hit Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia’s car in Brownsville, which caused the deputy’s death, and he will face prison time soon—he said he used cocaine and looked at his phone before the crash—.  KURV
  • 56-year-old Noe Garcia was arrested on burglary charges after confessing to stealing about $4,000 in instruments, A/C units, and chairs from a church storage room in Edinburg last Friday — he was released on a $10,000 bond — and police have not yet confirmed if all stolen items have been recovered.  FOX RGV
  • Edinburg police are searching for a suspect who stole $500 from the Shack Supplement and Chase store on Sugar Road and threatened an employee before fleeing and ask anyone with information to call Edinburg Crime Stoppers at 956-383-8477.  FOX RGV
  • A 42 year old man from San Carlos was arrested on a felony charge for allegedly attacking his 86 year old father during a welfare check in rural Hidalgo County where deputies discovered the elder with severe facial injuries including a broken nose, cheekbone, and jaw—his bond was set at $500,000.  FOX RGV
  • A minor student was arrested after a viral video captured a violent bullying incident at the IDEA campus in Edinburg and police said the suspect claimed the attack was retaliation for an earlier event—charges may be raised to a Class A misdemeanor carrying up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.  FOX RGV
  • Sergio Sanchez was charged with animal cruelty after a cat was found with no food or water in a rural part of Edinburg last month—officials say the case is part of a wider probe into animal neglect.  FOX RGV

  • Priests and bishops gathered at Basilica Of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle National Shrine on April 15 to renew their vows in the annual Chrism Mass in San Juan — members from 72 parishes and 44 mission churches attended the service. This sacred ritual reaffirmed their commitment to priestly work across the diocese.  MyRGV.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State representatives gave initial approval for a $7.7B education finance bill on Wednesday with a bipartisan vote of 144—4. The bill, which will fund teacher raises, training and special education, will next be sent to the Senate.  KURV
