  • On April 12, supporters gathered in Alamo to protest plans to demolish the historic San Juan Hotel, walking around the turf at the Landmark on Tower after 6 p.m. Local leaders and artists shared the building's history and urged city officials to meet with the community to consider new ideas for repurposing it.  MyRGV.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • McAllen Border Patrol agent Alejandro De Luna died in a car crash on April 8 and was laid to rest Tuesday at the State Veterans Cemetery—he served nine years as an agent with his tenth anniversary due next month and two others were injured in the crash.  KRGV
  • A deadly crash on U.S. 281 north of Edinburg early yesterday involved four vehicles and led to the deaths of a man and his four-year-old son when their Hyundai Tucson hit a wrong way Chevy Malibu and was struck by a tractor trailer—investigators suspect the Malibu driver was intoxicated.  KURV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Residents pressed the school board during a busy public comment session on April 14th to move forward on renaming Robert E. Lee Elementary, reminding trustees of their 2020 commitment. Community members stressed that the current name symbolizes Confederate ties — urging a new name that better reflects local values.  The Edinburg Advocate

SPORTS NEWS

  • Rio Grande Valley native Aarin Hartwell won first place in the Women and Women Longboard divisions at the TGSA State Surfing Championship Finals held April 5 and 6 in Corpus Christi. Hartwell, owner of SPI Sessions and Overall Points Champion for the 2025-2026 season, battled rough surf conditions—she scored 10.10 and 10.36 in her heats.  MyRGV.com
