  • WWII Navy veteran Albino Bazan Jr. celebrated his 101st birthday Tuesday at DHR Health Cardiac Rehabilitation in Edinburg with family, local officials, and a flag presentation from a U.S. Capitol honor. Edinburg City Councilman Dan Diaz declared Tuesday as Albino Bazan Jr. Day (recognizing his lifetime of service and dedication).  MyRGV.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six students from Harmony Science Academy in Brownsville will miss the 2026 VEX Robotics Championship in Missouri due to STAAR testing schedules, disappointing the team and their families. The school said it will plan differently for future events.  KRGV
  • Edinburg CISD named Robert Vela High School Defensive Coordinator Sean Landez as interim head football coach after head coach Ernesto (Ernie) Alonzo was suspended on March 26 amid misconduct allegations; the school board discussed his future at a closed session meeting on April 14.  KRGV

  • Hidalgo County Commission Pct. 4 Ellie Torres has announced Mental Health First Aid training in Edinburg that teaches adults to recognize and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges; the program offers a 7.5-hour in-person session and a blended online option for educators, law enforcement, and first responders.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Eulelia Garza experienced nausea and thirst after using a fake diabetes treatment that promised quick relief from routine medications.
