Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of April.
Good morning, Edinburg.
The City of Edinburg said a small Cessna made an emergency landing at South Texas International Airport Saturday morning — all three passengers were evaluated for minor injuries after an engine malfunction.
Dan Diorio, senior state policy director at the Data Center Coalition, said South Texas is positioned to attract data centers because the region offers affordable land and strong energy infrastructure; he explained that upcoming Senate Bill 6 and Senate Bill 2321 may change co-location arrangements to further strengthen grid reliability and boost economic development. Brownstone Consultants’ Guillermo Aguilar added that recent broadband projects and a resilient energy system prepare the area for growing technological investment.
The City of Edinburg and its Economic Development Corporation earned clean audit reports with unmodified opinions for the fiscal year ending September 30 from independent auditor Roel Cantu—showing strong financial practices with a $24.5 million reserve in the General Fund and an $11.7 million reserve for EDC. Council members thanked staff at the April 1 meeting for their work on maintaining the city's stable finances.
Two major Hidalgo County flood mitigation projects advanced in the state’s final Flood Infrastructure Fund Prioritization List, paving the way for potential funding this fiscal year.
The North Main Drain project—part of the county’s long-term efforts to reduce flood risk in Edinburg and McAllen—is designed to benefit 1,521 structures and lower flood depths by up to 1.7 feet during a 50-year storm event.
