COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Edinburg will host its annual Cool City Celebration on Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Promenade Amphitheatre, 201 W. McIntyre St. This free, family-friendly event will include a bike raffle, tree planting, vendor booths, and food trucks + educational resources to promote Earth Day, Arbor Day, National Community Development Week, and Stormwater Awareness Week.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Luisa Sáenz—a semiretired child advocate who once led Children's Defense Fund-RGV—has raised $35.9 million in grants for local nonprofits and now helps Valley View high school students gain admission to top universities.  Rio Grande Guardian

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police responded to a rollover crash in McAllen just before 2 p.m. Tuesday on the 32-hundred block of South Ware Road where a GMC pickup and a Chevy Tahoe collided and Border Patrol agent Alejandro De Luna — en route to work — died from his injuries as several others were taken to the hospital.  KURV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Siddons-Martin Emergency Group opened a new $1.9 million, 12,000-square-foot service facility at 700 Independence Drive in the Edinburg North Industrial Park on April 3 — the facility replaces its former location in Pharr. The company, which employs nine people, now improves repair and maintenance services for fire apparatus, ambulances and other emergency vehicles serving agencies in eight counties across South Texas.  The Edinburg Advocate

CRIME NEWS

  • Mexican authorities said the body of Moises Jenoada (an Edinburg resident) was found in Matamoros as searchers looked for a 19-year-old man near Playa Baghdad and they are investigating his death and why he was in Mexico.  KURV
  • A Silver Alert was issued for Luis Alberto Sandoval, 46, who was last seen March 25 on North 15th Street at an apartment complex in McAllen; authorities urged residents to report any sightings by calling the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office (956) 383-8114.  FOX RGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UTRGV received a $2.8M NSF grant to expand its AI research and education and to partner with Georgia Tech's AI Institute for Advances in Optimization. The grant supports new courses, labs and research groups—designed to enhance infrastructure monitoring and drone technology—while also strengthening the university’s new doctoral program.  MyRGV.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hidalgo County officials are reviewing proposals from lawmakers to add additional courts to the new courthouse. County leaders, including Judge Rodolfo Gonzalez and County Judge Richard F. Cortez, noted that the courthouse lacks space and funding — if passed, the new courts will be in effect in September.  MyRGV.com
  • Valley leaders are urging legislators to form a regional flood control district—this plan would combine drainage efforts and restructure tax levies following the heavy floods on March 28th. Harlingen officials are also offering $3,000 grants from a $165,000 fund to help about 100 businesses recover from the damage.  MyRGV.com
