ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A DPS unit was involved in a crash in Edinburg around 7 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of McColl and Canton Roads that injured a female pedestrian—she was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.  KURV
  • A woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after an auto-pedestrian crash involving a DPS trooper occurred today at 7:00 a.m. at the intersection of McColl and Canton Road in Edinburg — the trooper was unharmed and the cause is under investigation.  FOX RGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Edinburg Police Chief Jaime Ayala presented the 2024 report showing overall crime dropped by 19.5% and property crimes fell nearly 25% while noting 174 vehicle thefts last year, rising arrests, and increased DWI stops—she added that new programs like the teen academy and Dog Walker Watch aim to further boost community safety.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Edinburg police arraigned 19-year-old Moisés Isaiah Rodriguez today after he allegedly threatened nine people with a firearm Tuesday night—he now faces nine counts of deadly conduct, unlawful weapon carrying, evading arrest and two drug offenses—and he is held on a $625,000 bond while federal charges are under review.  FOX RGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the end of March, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton introduced new reporting rules for district attorneys representing counties with a population of 400,000 or more, which include Hidalgo and Cameron counties. Both Cameron County DA Luis V. Saenz and Hidalgo County DA Toribio Palacios said they would comply but expressed concerns about the extra workload without additional staffing — Palacios requested more personnel support.  MyRGV.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Texas Health System Clinics welcomed board-certified orthopedic trauma surgeon Dr. Andrew Merwin, who joined the McAllen clinic in January to treat injuries from falls, car accidents and sports. Trained at Mercer University School of Medicine and John Peter Smith Hospital—he brings expertise that will offer improved care for local patients.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Dr. David Alonzo, a Rio Grande Valley native and the only urologic oncologist south of San Antonio, said men should check their testicles regularly to spot small lumps that could be signs of cancer.   • South Texas Health System is partnering with KRGV and the UTRGV School of Nursing to offer free blood glucose screenings for residents in Edinburg and McAllen every Friday in April. The screenings will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—held at 1102 W. Trenton Road in Edinburg and 301 W. Expressway 83 in McAllen—to help spot early signs of diabetes.  MyRGV.com
