CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 29-year-old McAllen man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a fatal crash in Edinburg on Sept. 9th, 2023 — he failed to stop at a red light, killing a 26-year-old woman and injuring her passenger. MyRGV.com
- ➤ An Alamo man was arrested Tuesday night after he threatened residents with a gun near Jackson Road and University Drive and fled on foot—officers pursued him into a canal, recovered a loaded pistol and narcotics, and charged him with aggravated assault, manufacturing/delivery of cocaine, and evading arrest while authorities review possible federal prosecution. - ➤ Dr. Daniel Covarrubias, director of the Texas Center for Border Enterprise and Economic Development, spoke at the Friends of COSTEP quarterly meeting in McAllen at the Cambria Hotel McAllen Convention Center, answering questions in Spanish from Mexican business leaders about how tariffs may affect the economy. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Last week’s storm raised questions about the Rio Grande Valley’s floodways, and on Wednesday IBWC officials monitored rising water levels as the Arroyo Colorado surged to 8,000 to 12,000 cubic feet per second compared to its normal 100 cubic feet. IBWC Commissioner Maria Elena Giner said the system managed the excess water flow—while county officials remain concerned that high water may affect the connecting gates. KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Valley health officials say heavy rains left many spots with standing water in the Rio Grande Valley—this creates breeding places for mosquitoes that spread West Nile and Dengue Fever. They work with city officials to spray Permethrin in these areas to cut down the mosquito count. KRGV
- ➤ Monica Alaniz-McGinnis, a 47-year-old (La Joya native), was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in her late twenties and has lowered her A1C from over 10 to 5.2 by changing her diet and exercise routine. More than 43 percent of people in the Rio Grande Valley have diabetes, which can lead to serious complications like blindness and amputations if left untreated. KRGV
