CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Georgia woman from Canton named Mirna Luna pleaded guilty to smuggling 17 firearms and 27 magazines hidden in her car’s gas tank when she attempted to cross into Mexico at the Brownsville port on December 15 and will remain in custody pending sentencing on July 8 — authorities discovered the contraband during a secondary inspection. - ➤ U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez criticized the removal of Edinburg’s local hero, U.S. Marine Sergeant Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez, from the Naval History website—saying this change under a DEI policy erases his honored legacy and misrepresents his service in Vietnam. Rio Grande Guardian
- ➤ Edinburg waived building permit fees for roofing and home repairs related to flood damage from April 1 until April 15. The city also launched a brush and bulky item collection program for storm debris — residents are urged to contact the Building Safety Department for guidance. KRGV
- ➤ Hidalgo County’s long-awaited new seven-story courthouse officially opened yesterday, after construction began in 2018 and delays pushed its planned 2021 opening.
