  • San Antonio Salvation Army workers have been in the Rio Grande Valley to help flood victims after Thursday’s severe storms. Two workers from San Antonio, two others and a mobile feeding unit from New Braunfels arrived Sunday— they will serve meals and offer spiritual care as Governor Greg Abbott declared disaster for Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr and Willacy Counties.  KURV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • IKEA U.S. will open a new store at Pharr Town Center at 500 N. Jackson Rd, with construction beginning on June 2 and completion expected by Aug. 18 — the project costs $4.5 million and will be the first full-scale location in the Valley. This development offers the region a local option for IKEA products after only having a pick-up site in McAllen.  MyRGV.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal authorities charged a Mexican man in the country illegally, Jose Alexis Baeza-Combaluzier, for a deadly smuggling event in Edcouch on March 28th that left a woman and a child dead—Border Patrol rescued him and four others when his vehicle rolled into a flooded canal and he is being held without bond.  MyRGV.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT released a road closure map on DriveTexas.org to show real-time updates on traffic, detours, and flooded roads in the Rio Grande Valley + crews monitor key corridors like Expressway 83 and FM 495 while warning drivers not to travel through high water.  FOX RGV
  • TxDOT crews inspected minor damage to a concrete barrier on I-69 East north of the interchange after floodwaters receded and confirmed the overpass is safe for public use. The agency said repairs will begin soon - drivers may face intermittent lane closures during work.  FOX RGV
