  • Border Patrol confirmed that one person drowned Friday morning in Edcouch after a vehicle plunged into a canal during an investigation of suspected human smuggling, and one individual remains unaccounted for.  KRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • A long standoff on Marshall Hunts Road in Arroyo City ended with police arresting a suspect who acted erratically while serving a warrant — and Edinburg police arrested a 15-year-old near Donna for an armed robbery at Nine Tails Smoke Shop on North Doolittle Road, with two other suspects still at large.  FOX RGV
  • A man suspected of smuggling drowned Friday morning in a canal near Edcouch after he fled Border Patrol agents who approached his stopped vehicle on a flooded roadway at about 10:15 a.m.—rescue efforts continue and another individual remains unaccounted amid widespread regional flooding.  MyRGV.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Texas Senate passed SB2 in February by a 19-12 vote to create a school voucher program that sets aside $1 billion over two years for private education expenses. House Bill 3 is still pending while local officials at Harvest Christian Academy in Edinburg expect higher enrollment if the plan is enacted—though critics warn that public school funding may drop.  MyRGV.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Widespread flooding hit parts of the Rio Grande Valley on Friday after a severe thunderstorm brought heavy rain that overwhelmed drainage systems and led towns including Harlingen, Edinburg, and McAllen to declare disasters; emergency crews rescued stranded motorists and canceled Valley International Airport flights while the Arroyo Colorado set a new crest record (30.44 feet).  MyRGV.com

  • TxDOT spokesman Ray Pedraza is urging drivers to avoid flooded roads as debris and stalled cars have caused closures in the TxDOT Pharr District—crews are still waiting for floodwaters to recede.  KRGV

  • DHR Health confirmed its information systems were hit by a cyberattack on March 20—patient appointments were delayed as some patient data remained inaccessible while IT staff worked to restore systems. The hospital said all care sites are open for patients.  MyRGV.com
