ECONOMY NEWS

  • Farmers in South Texas have seen their water supply cut and will soon receive $280 million in federal aid from the USDA—lawmakers warned that Mexico must meet its 1944 treaty obligations by November.  FOX RGV
  • County commissioners approved the Hidalgo County Economic Development Promotion and Advertisement Program to boost local economic growth and attract new businesses in the area. The program will use county funds to advertise the region and recruit convention businesses that bring visitors.  KURV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Southmost College received two grants from RSTEF—one for $100,000 for its CTE Pipeline Scholarship Program and one for $200,000 for its Graduation Pathway Scholarship Program. The funds will help local students gain skills and certifications for better job opportunities.  Rio Grande Guardian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deputy Mike Daniel Aleman rescued Pablo Arredondo from a burning mobile home in McAllen on Feb. 22 at 10:27 p.m., and Arredondo later thanked him at the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court meeting in Edinburg on March 18—where Aleman received a medal of valor and other awards for his brave act.  MyRGV.com
  • Sonny Hinojosa—a retired irrigation district manager—participated in a private meeting on March 19 at a farm south of San Juan with U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins to discuss the water crisis and Mexico's failure to meet a 1944 water treaty. He later shared his reaction with the Rio Grande Guardian in a video interview.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced $280M in block grants yesterday in San Juan to help South Texas farmers cope with a worsening water crisis—Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins spoke with local farmers during an event hosted by Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Monica De La Cruz, who warned of broad regional and national impacts.  KURV
  • At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Edinburg voted to move forward with plans for a downtown parking garage by beginning negotiations with five firms ranked for meeting a proposed $6.2 million budget for a 256-space, three-story building — Austin-based Broaddus Construction was ranked first with Edinburg-based Gerlach Builders as a close second. Mayor Ramiro Garza said if negotiations with the first firm fail, the city will work with the next-ranked firm and draft a contract for later Council approval.  MyRGV.com
  • The city of Edinburg announced on Facebook that some residents will face a water service interruption — officials are set to begin repairs soon — while details on timing remain pending.  KRGV
