  • The Edinburg Rotary Club will host Bayou Brewfest 2026 at the Courtyard Promenade on Saturday, March 28 at 6 p.m., featuring live music, craft beer, raffle prizes, and Cajun cuisine & raising funds for local and international service projects.  KRGV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • RGV Startup Week is set to run from Apr. 24 to May 1 and is co-organized by Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation and UTRGV’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Commercialization. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas Southmost College has announced plans to build a Workforce Training Center on South Padre Island adjacent to the U.S. Coast Guard Station to address local workforce shortages in pipefitting, welding & healthcare jobs. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Progreso Police Department will launch a new autism safety registry next month to help officers better identify and support individuals on the spectrum. Families can register and share key details + officers will receive specialized training and sensory kits to improve emergency response.  KRGV
  • State Reps. Romero and Wu opposed a March 18 hearing that revisited the landmark Plyler v. Doe decision, arguing that questioning children’s public education rights can worsen uncertainty for local schools — they urged the committee to uphold constitutional protections.  Rio Grande Guardian
  • Starting April 1, new SNAP restrictions will bar purchases of sweetened beverages and candy to promote healthier choices after Gov. Abbott signed Senate Bill 379, and retailers will update systems + train staff to comply with the new rules.  KSAT
  • On Tuesday, Governor Abbott announced a $375K grant from the Texas Workforce Commission at a McAllen graduation ceremony to fund Certified Nurse Aide training in the Rio Grande Valley; over 50 students were recognized for completing their courses.  KURV
