COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hidalgo County Precinct 4 and Edinburg CISD will break ground on Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. for Southeast Park at 4483 E. Canton Rd. (behind Betts and Esparza Elementary Schools). The park will feature a splash pad, trails, an inclusive playground, and sports courts for southeast families.  The Edinburg Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Edinburg Cultural Arts Division and Conceptos Dance Ensemble will present the Rio Grande Valley Dance Regional Competition on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Edinburg Arts, Culture, and Events Center (315 W. McIntyre St.), featuring traditional and contemporary dance presentations.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • The second Walking Southern Roads to Freedom will begin Friday, Feb. 27 in Alamo and span three days (24 miles total), visiting sites in Hidalgo and ending with walkers crossing into Reynosa on March 1.   • Edinburg Rotary Club will host Bayou Brewfest 2026 on Saturday, March 28 at 6 p.m. at the Courtyard Promenade (featuring live music, craft beer, raffle prizes, and Cajun food) to raise funds for local and international service projects.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Maximiliano Rodriguez, 17, is protecting the digital future for local businesses at South Texas College’s new Cybersecurity Clinic funded by a $467,000 grant+ he and 11 fellow students are getting ready to launch training sessions once local organizations sign on.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Edinburg CISD conducted an intruder audit on 33 campuses on Wednesday and found that some doors did not lock properly because vendors left them open or required keypad modifications (three campuses had minor locking issues). School police said regular door checks and armed officers keep campuses secure.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Edinburg Police Department will graduate eight cadets from its inaugural academy class tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the City Council Chambers at 415 W. University Drive — the cadets completed months of training in patrol procedures, crisis intervention, and community policing under local supervision.  The Edinburg Advocate
