  • The Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library will host an adult Open Mic Night at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at 1906 S. Closner Blvd (performances are limited to seven minutes for music, poetry, and comedy). Call the Reference Department at 956-383-6246 for registration.  The Edinburg Advocate
  • Dr. Rashmi Chandran, CEO of AltaCair Foundation, discussed new projects in an interview. The group, which opened a Community-Care Closet in Edinburg, will host a health fair on March 10 in San Carlos colonia and Havana Nights fundraising on April 24 in Mission.  Rio Grande Guardian

  • Flower Hut owner Jerry Gonzalez expects up to 500 orders today and starts taking calls at 7 a.m. (he absorbed a 30% tariff increase on imported flowers to keep prices steady).  KRGV

  • A state-passed private school voucher plan is drawing strong interest as over 90,000 applications have been submitted ahead of next week’s deadline (with expectations to exceed 100,000) amid struggles at local public schools.  KURV
  • Free bilingual citizenship orientation sessions will be held Saturday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 7 at 11:30 a.m. at the Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library; offered by Uniendo Naciones, Solo Por Servir (at 1906 S. Closner Blvd), the program kicks off U.S. citizenship classes starting March 28.  The Edinburg Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Several South Texas hospitals earned top ratings in Forbes’ first-ever list of hospital excellence. Edinburg’s South Texas Health System received five stars along with hospitals in Harlingen, Weslaco and McAllen, while Mission Regional and Valley Baptist scored four stars.  KURV
  • Interventional Cardiologist Victor Castro talked on Channel 5 News about heart disease warning signs while urging people to control high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes; a Heart Healthy Expo offering exercise tips, cooking advice and free screenings runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at STHS Heart hospital, McAllen.  KRGV
  • Last year, Mission man Randy Dressen’s routine checkup revealed dangerous artery blockage, and he underwent a life-saving quadruple bypass; he now recovers by walking his dogs and plans a visit to Costa Rica later this year.
