  • Capable Kids Foundation will host its Unstoppable Red Cape 5K and Fun Run—raising funds for programs that empower Valley kids and adults with disabilities—on Saturday, March 14 at the Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Regional Hike and Bike Trail in San Juan.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The family of Colin Feltis, a 16-year-old South Texas ISD student who died on Oct. 21 in a car crash, is honoring his memory by launching an esports scholarship for seniors at World Scholars in Edinburg and Science Academy in Mercedes; applications open next month + more details will be shared locally.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins and Governor Greg Abbott attended Monday's opening of a facility in Edinburg that produces sterile flies to stop the New World Screwworm parasite from harming cattle — officials expect the flies to prevent the insects from reproducing.  KURV
  • Several Hidalgo County Justices of the Peace will offer free wedding ceremonies by appointment on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14 at locations in Pharr, Mission, Edinburg and Elsa; couples must have a valid marriage license obtained at least 72 hours before the ceremony.  The Edinburg Advocate

  • Edinburg Parks and Recreation invites runners to join the sixth annual Hometown of Heroes Half Marathon and 10K run on Sunday, March 8 at 7 a.m. The event offers a 13.1 mile race, a 10K option and a relay for teams of two with discounts for veterans + first responders.  The Edinburg Advocate
