- ➤ Yaqui Animal Rescue will host the Be Mine Canine 5K run/walk on Feb. 14 at Edinburg Municipal Park (starting at 7 a.m.) to honor Cane and raise funds for abused animals in the Rio Grande Valley. KRGV

- ➤ Channel 5 News' chief meteorologist Tim Smith is named a finalist for the National Weatherperson of the Year Award and voters in the Rio Grande Valley may cast their vote once each day until Jan. 30. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UTRGV bought the 89,000 sqft (former Monitor) building in McAllen to become the home of its new School of Optometry and boost regional health services. The optometry program, which earned Stage One designation in May 2025, will launch in fall 2027. The Edinburg Advocate
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A $3 million detention pond project at Edinburg North High School is set for completion in March to ease decades-long flooding while adding a recreational field for students, homes, and businesses. KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ DHR Health Transplant Institute performed 101 kidney transplants in 2025, the highest since it opened in 2017. Dr. Sridhar Allam said the milestone reflects the team’s commitment to keeping treatment local at the institute on 1100 E. Dove Ave. in Edinburg. MyRGV.com
