- ➤ Fire agencies across the Valley will host a free Fire Safety Expo at Bert Ogden Arena on Monday, Jan. 12 from 4:20 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event will offer live demonstrations, fire extinguisher training + expert advice on building a home escape plan. KRGV

- ➤ Channel 5 News’ Chief Meteorologist Tim Smith is one of five finalists for the National Weatherperson of the Year Award. Viewers can vote online until Friday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m. CT, with the winner announced on Wednesday, Feb. 4. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ RGV LEAD launched the S3 Entrepreneurship Challenge for student entrepreneurs in the region, with a Zoom kickoff scheduled for Jan. 14 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The program provides mentorship and real-world business skill training and charges $40 for member districts and $60 for non-members. - ➤ Residents raised concerns during the Jan. 6 council meeting about AI data centers (which may lead to higher electricity bills, increased water use and pollution) in Edinburg and questioned who would pay for necessary upgrades.
